Bring Your Own Book Club
Rapid City Public Library is excited to announce the long-awaited return of a librarian organized Book Club. The inaugural book for discussing is Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford. Please join us on Saturday November 19th at 1 p.m. at Bully Blends at 908 Main Street across from the Federal Building for an afternoon discussing book over tea and coffee.
Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet is an amazing debut novel set in Seattle, Washington during World War II and is about a love story between a young Chinese-American boy, Henry, and his Japanese-American friend, Keiko. Despite the prejudice against Asian-Americans by the white community as well prejudice between the Chinese-American and Japanese-American communities, Henry and Keiko are able to transcend their circumstances to form a friendship and ultimately fall in love. Set against the backdrop of one of the most terrible times in American history, the novel is really about hope, forgiveness and the transcendent power of love.
Similar to the novel Snow Falling on Cedars, copies of this title are available in print, book on cd and downloadable audiobooks and eBooks. Please visit www.rapidcitylibrary.org to search the catalog or access the downloadable versions. We also will have the book on display at our downtown location but come quickly, books are flying out the door!
Didn’t get a chance to get your hands on the book? Not a problem! Show up anyway and BYOB (Bring Your Own Book) to discuss. Book discussions are a great way to grab a coffee or tea, relax and mingle, discuss what you are reading with like-minded (or not-so-like minded because that is OK too) individuals and learn about what is new and popular at the library.
